Imagine my surprise walking into Berkeley Hillel in the early 1950’s and finding my childhood Rabbi from Tucson, AZ, Rabbi Gumbiner, was now the Berkeley Hillel Rabbi! Being the uncommon out-of-state student in those days, it was comforting knowing a small piece of my Jewish life at home was with me in Berkeley.

The photo is my cousin Don Newman from Tulsa OK (left) and me, Ron Kaufman from Tucson, AZ (right) at a ZBT Fraternity formal dance in 1952.
